If you’re struggling with self-doubt, Mel has some advice for you. “The research about confidence is very clear, that confidence isn’t a feeling. You don’t feel confident. Confidence the definition I want you to really embrace and live by is the willingness to try,” she told us. “Because every time you try, especially in the face of doubt, you are displaying that you believe in your ability to survive whatever happens next. One of the things she taught us was a way to expand our minds. And the scenario she used to show us this? The lotto game she would play with her husband. She went on to say, “I used to make him play this game called the lotto game, which was ‘What if you had [x] amount of money?’… I did that for a number of reasons. I wanted to lift his spirits because he was really down. And, I wanted to get his mind to expand. And, it worked. I did it every single day… That’s part of why I did the lotto game, was because I wanted to get him to think bigger and to realize it takes as much energy to think small as it does to think big.”
