Who Is Nikki Reed? From Troubled Teen to Conscious Entrepreneur

In 2003, the critically acclaimed film Thirteen was released, starring Nikki Reed. The movie was immediately controversial for its raw, unfiltered, R-rated portrayal of early-2000s adolescence. If you were a parent at the time, you may have been one of the many viewers who found it disturbing or even infuriating. But if you were a teenager? Thirteen didn’t feel like a warning—it felt like a mirror. Uncomfortable. Validating. Impossible to forget.

What most people don’t realize is that Thirteen wasn’t just another coming-of-age movie. It was actually based on Nikki Reed’s real life. At the time, Nikki wasn’t an actress at all. She was a teenager living the very experiences the film depicted. Director Catherine Hardwicke encouraged her to audition despite having no formal training, believing no one could understand the story more honestly than the teen who lived it. And she was right.

Pretty amazing, right? It probably has you wondering . . . Who is Nikki Reed? And how did she become the wildly successful actress, entrepreneur, and mother she is today after all that hardship? We wanted answers too!

To learn more about Nikki Reed’s past and present, Lauryn and Michael invited Nikki and her husband (the one and only Ian Somerhalder) onto the Him & Her Show. You can listen to the full Nikki Reed podcast with TSC for all the details. But for now? We’ll share what we learned about Nikki’s life story below:

Who Is Nikki Reed? From Troubled Teen to Conscious Entrepreneur

Nikki Reed is an actress, screenwriter, entrepreneur, and activist. She’s married to Ian Somhalder, and they raise their two children together in California. Nikki’s best known for her roles in Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, and The Twilight Saga. Outside acting, she co-founded the sustainable luxury jewelry brand BaYou with Love.

Where Is Nikki Reed From?

Nikki Reed was born and raised in Los Angeles. There, she was exposed to both the good and the bad of the entertainment industry—and of adolescence itself. Growing up in Los Angeles also shaped her interests in art, design, sustainability, and conscious living.

How Old Was Nikki Reed in Twilight?

At just 20 years old, Nikki Reed stepped into one of her most iconic roles as Rosalie Hale in The Twilight Saga. Rosalie is a forever-teenaged vampire, known for her fierce loyalty, guarded heart, and underlying bitterness. Unlike many members of the Cullen family, Rosalie represents the darker side of eternal youth—a perspective Nikki portrayed with striking (but understandable) ease.

Here’s how her age compared to the rest of the cast at the time the film came out:

  • Nikki Reed: Rosalie Hale – 19–23 years old
  • Kristen Stewart: Bella Swan – 17–21 years old
  • Robert Pattinson: Edward Cullen – 21–25 years old
  • Taylor Lautner: Jacob Black – 15–19 years old
  • Ashley Greene: Alice Cullen – 20–24 years old
  • Kellan Lutz: Emmett Cullen – 22–26 years old
  • Jackson Rathbone: Jasper Hale – 23–27 years old
  • Elizabeth Reaser: Esme Cullen – 32–36 years old
  • Peter Facinelli: Carlisle Cullen – 34–38 years old

What Happened to Nikki Reed When She Was Younger?

Struggled with School, Family Life, and Peer Pressure

Nikki’s parents divorced when she was young, leaving her home life unstable. She was often unsupervised, with little routine or emotional support. As a result, this blurred the normal boundaries between adolescence and adulthood. To make matters worse, Nikki left traditional school at just 13 due to bullying and a lack of healthy coping skills to manage the pressures of high school.

All of this led Nikki down a dark path. She matured quickly and gravitated toward older, riskier friend groups, leading to extreme rebellious behavior. By thirteen, she was experimenting with drugs and alcohol, shoplifting, and unhealthy romantic relationships. Any way you look at it, Nikki’s early years didn’t seem like a strong foundation for healthy growth or long-term success.

Introduced to Catherien Hardwicke as a Mentor

It was obvious to everyone around Nikki that she was struggling. Though she was bright, articulate, and creative, she lacked guidance and support. Because of this, a family friend connected her with director Catherine Hardwicke. The goal wasn’t to make a movie, but to provide mentorship—something that could support Nikki’s emotional needs and creative expression.

The two were a natural fit, and their early conversations centered on the important stuff. Think: adolescence, identity, peer pressure, and the realities of what girls were actually experiencing at 13 (not what we saw on the Disney Channel). Eventually, those conversations turned into writing. It was the perfect way to process experiences, reflect on the past, and gain perspective for the future.

Co-Wrote and Starred in the Semi-Autobiographical Film Thirteen

Eventually, the writing sessions became more structured and evolved into the script for the semi-autobiographical film Thirteen. The story drew directly from Nikki’s real-life experiences, perspectives, and behavior. It was a deeply personal retelling that neither exaggerated nor softened the truth. It delivered one of the most raw and realistic portrayals of teenage rebellion of its time.

Catherine Hardwicke pursued the project beyond the original mentoring sessions and committed to turning it into a full-length film. She believed the story was an important cultural commentary that needed to be shared. When casting began, Catherine encouraged Nikki to audition despite her lack of acting experience. She insisted that no one could understand the subject matter or portray it more honestly than Nikki herself.

To hear more about this process, here’s Nikki discussing co-writing Thirteen on the Him & Her Show.

Rose to Fame Through the Critically Acclaimed (and Controversial) Movie

Nikki was cast as the lead character, Evie Zamora. In the film, Evie, a manipulative and deeply wounded girl, befriends the quiet, overachieving Tracy Freeland, played by Evan Rachel Wood. The two spiral out of control under Evie’s influence. This leaves Tracy’s mother (Holly Hunter) desperately fighting to protect her daughter and regain control. The plot, while unsettling, was an unfortunately accurate portrait of early-2000s adolescent experience.

Upon its release, the film became one of the most talked-about movies of its time. However, while critics praised it, parents, educators, and youth advocacy groups widely condemned it. Many worried the film glamorized behaviors like adolescent drug use, sexual experimentation, self-harm, and criminal behavior rather than discouraging them.

Despite the backlash, critics largely applauded the film’s realism and scalding honesty. Holly Hunter was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance, and Nikki Reed’s career skyrocketed. Despite having no formal acting training, she had no trouble booking additional roles. Her later appearances in Lord of Dogtown, The Twilight Saga, Sleepy Hollow, and more are a true testament to this.

Shifted Her Priorities Toward Activism and Purpose-Driven Work

By the 2010s, Nikki and her husband Ian Somerhalder began shifting their focus away from Hollywood. She never wanted fame to be her primary identity, and she’s more interested in making a real, tangible impact. While taking fewer and more intentional roles, Nikki shifted her focus to sustainable entrepreneurship, family life, holistic living, animal welfare, and environmental activism.

What Is Nikki Reed Doing Now

What Is Nikki Reed Doing Now?

Runs the Sustainable Jewelry Brand BaYou with Love

Nikki Reed runs a sustainable fine-jewelry brand called BaYou with Love. It’s a luxury brand that focuses on ethical sourcing and circular design. Each piece features responsibly sourced gemstones, recycled metals, transparent supply chains, and low-waste production methods.

The brand’s aesthetic is minimal, modern, and timeless, reflecting Nikki’s views on consumerism. Instead of making cheap, trendy jewelry that gets tossed once it’s out of style, she creates heirloom-quality pieces meant to be worn for decades.

Co-Leads The Absorption Company with Her Husband

Nikki also co-leads The Absorption Company alongside her husband, Ian Somerhalder. The duo created the brand to address a major gap in the supplement industry: poor absorption. Rather than focusing on trendy ingredients or mega doses, The Absorption Company prioritizes bioavailability. The fact that your body can actually use the formulation makes their products among the best supplements on the market.

The company reflects Nikki’s broader philosophy around wellness and intentional living. More specifically, the formula emphasizes quality sourcing, thoughtful delivery systems, and transparency. Naturally, this aligns with her belief that health products should be effective, responsibly made, and rooted in long-term well-being rather than quick fixes.

For more information, listen to Nikki and Ian break down how The Absorption Company does supplements better in their interview with TSC.

Advocates for Environmental and Social Causes

Both Nikki Reed and her husband, Ian Somerhalder, are deeply passionate about protecting the planet. Unlike many Hollywood figures who promote constant consumption, Nikki actively encourages her audience to buy less and practice conscious consumerism.

She also supports her husband’s nonprofit, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. The organization is dedicated to advancing environmental protection, animal welfare, access to clean water, and youth education. Other causes Nikki is passionate about include:

  • Environmental sustainability and conservation
  • Ethical fashion and responsible jewelry production
  • Animal welfare and wildlife protection
  • Conscious, low-waste consumerism
  • Clean water access and environmental health
  • Educating the next generation on sustainability and stewardship

Chooses Acting Roles More Selectively

Since stepping away from Hollywood as her primary focus, Nikki Reed hasn’t joined another major franchise. Instead, she sticks to smaller, independent projects that feel meaningful to her. She hasn’t fully retired from acting, but she’s far more intentional about the roles she takes on. This allows her to stay focused on her family, business, and environmental initiatives.

Her last major fictional project was V-Wars in 2019. It’s a Netflix horror series about climate change triggering a virus that turns people into vampires. She appeared in the TV show alongside her husband, Ian Somerhalder. In 2024, Nikki narrated a short film about Dr. Jane Goodall—another project that closely aligned with her evolving priorities and passions.

Is Married with Kids to Actor Ian Somerhalder

In 2014, Nikki met Ian Somerhalder (the very same from Lost and The Vampire Diaries) through mutual friends involved in environmental and humanitarian work. The two grew close, and their relationship quickly turned romantic because of their shared values and life experiences. They were married on April 26, 2015, and now have two children together.

Nikki was previously married to singer Paul McDonald. The couple divorced amicably in January 2015 after realizing they were on different life paths. They remain on good terms, and Paul has publicly expressed that he’s happy for Nikki in this chapter of her life.

Lives a More Private, Family-Centered Life on a Farm

Today, Nikki Reed lives a quieter, more private life centered around family, sustainability, and nature. Far away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood, she and her family now live on a farm. There, Nikki and Ian prioritize hands-on living, environmental responsibility, and raising their children with an appreciation for the natural world.

If you’re curious about why Nikki and Ian are so private, listen to the two of them talk about navigating fame and privacy on the podcast.

Actress Nikki Reed is proof that growth, accountability, and purpose can change any life.

Nikki Reed’s story isn’t just about early fame or Hollywood success—it’s about transformation. She took a turbulent adolescence, one that could have easily defined her in all the wrong ways, and turned it into a catalyst for healing, perspective, and purpose.

Today, her life looks radically different from where it began: grounded, values-driven, and centered on family, sustainability, and meaningful impact. In many ways, Nikki’s evolution is proof that your past doesn’t have to limit you. Instead, it can become the very thing that shapes who you choose to be next.
