If you were a kid in the ‘90s or 2000s, there’s no doubt you kept the TV Guide close to make sure you didn’t miss the next episode of Full House. Whether you binged the reruns or caught new episodes weekly on TGIF, this sitcom now has a special place in your heart. Unlike shows today that are strictly for kids or strictly for adults, Full House struck that perfect balance. Fun conflicts and meaningful lessons for kids. Deep character relationships and hunky Uncle Jesse for adults.
What you may not know about Full House is that the family-friendly atmosphere wasn’t all pretend. The actors and actresses on the show spent eight seasons together and became like a true found family. That was especially true for Jodie Sweetin, who played the middle daughter. And if you don’t remember her character name (first of all, how rude!), it was Stephanie Tanner. Now, are we jogging your memory?
What Happened to Jodie Sweetin? Her Life After Full House
After the final episode, Jodie struggled to transition from the show to her young adult life. Her story looked bleak, like many child actors, but she came out of it stronger than ever. To hear all about her journey and get exclusive behind-the-scenes details about one of our favorite 90s sitcoms, Lauryn and Michael welcomed Jodie Sweetin onto the Him & Her Show.
We really recommend you listen to the whole Jodie Sweetin podcast with TSC, because it’s super interesting and completely inspiring. But if you’re dying to know what happened to Stephanie Tanner, we’ll give you the details below.
Who Is Jodie Sweetin?
Jodie Sweetin is an actress, author, and sobriety advocate best known for playing Stephanie Tanner on Full House. She landed the role at just five years old in 1987 and stayed with the show for its entire eight-season run—later reprising her iconic role in the 2016 reboot, Fuller House.

What Happened to Jodie Sweetin After Full House?
Struggled with Addiction
Jodie’s real-life family life was turbulent, so her co-stars became her sense of stability and belonging. When the show ended, that foundation disappeared, leaving Jodie struggling to cope with life after Full House.
Reflecting on that period, Jodie has said, “It was a huge shift in my life. Everything I had known from the time I was 5 years old suddenly ended, and it was like saying goodbye to a family I had loved very, very much.”
Without the structure and support system she’d relied on for most of her childhood, Jodie started drinking at a young age to manage stress and the pressures of fame. Over time, her substance abuse intensified, and she became addicted to crystal meth. It wasn’t until the birth of her first child that Jodie found the motivation to seek help.
Recovered and Got Sober
Jodie entered treatment and made a genuine commitment to long-term sobriety after becoming a mother. For the first time, she found the tools to relieve stress, navigate a public career, and work through unresolved trauma. The road to recovery was anything but easy—but through consistency, accountability, and a complete lifestyle reset, she reclaimed her life.
Returned to Acting and Public Life
Once she became sober, Jodie cautiously—but confidently—stepped back into life in the public eye. She also stopped distancing herself from her Full House castmates, who had never stopped supporting her or reaching out. Instead, she began building deeper, more meaningful relationships with them.
Then, her major comeback came in 2016. Jodie returned to acting in high-profile roles and competed on Dancing with the Stars. This was her opportunity to officially reintroduce herself to the world on her own terms.

Reprised Her Role on Fuller House
In 2015, Jodie returned to work on Netflix’s Full House follow-up series, Fuller House, which aired in February 2016. She reprised her role as Stephanie Tanner and got the opportunity to explore the character as an adult, stepping into deeper, more mature storylines.
On the reboot, Stephanie found purpose, love, and ultimately motherhood—a narrative arc that closely mirrored Jodie’s own personal growth. In many ways, returning to the show felt like meaningful closure. It marked the completion of both her professional comeback and the personal journey she’d worked hard on behind the scenes.
Became an Advocate for Sobriety
Today, Jodie speaks openly and honestly about addiction, healing, and the lasting effects of growing up in the spotlight. She gently encourages anyone facing similar struggles to seek accountability, surround themselves with supportive people, and get help from a professional drug and alcohol counselor when needed.
For Jodie, being open about recovery isn’t just about helping others. It’s a meaningful part of maintaining her own sobriety and staying grounded in the life she’s worked hard to build.

Wrote a Memoir About Life So Far
In 2009, Jodie released her memoir, unSweetined. This story offers a raw and often painful look at her childhood fame and rocky transition into adulthood. At its core, though, the book is a story of redemption—chronicling how Jodie became a mother, found sobriety, and reshaped her life. Through her honesty, Jodie hopes the memoir helps others feel less alone on their own recovery journeys.

Unfortunately, we’re rarely surprised when we hear about the trauma that can come with child stardom. Too often, young actors struggle to adapt to adulthood, develop unhealthy dependencies, and see their reputations and careers suffer as a result.
But that isn’t Jodie’s story—and she’s more than just a Full House star. She bounced back and is now an inspiration. She’s the perfect example of what’s possible when we have a true willingness to do the hard work to heal.
